Changes for foodbank service in Ripon

Changes for foodbank service in Ripon

Published by Lisa Darvill at 6:25am 7th July 2020.

Ripon's 'Bread of Life' foodbank is closing with the service being taken over by another team.

  • The service will soon be run by Ripon Community House
  • It will be called 'Food Support Ripon' and should be up and running by 1st August
  • At that time, the 'Bread of Life' foodbank will be wound up
  • 'Bread of Life' has been supporting the community since 2011

The 'Bread of Life' foodbank was set up by Alec Lutton in 2011 and has been based at Ripon Community House since January 2019.

At the start of the coronavirus lockdown in March, Alec says he and his team of volunteers had to step away from the project in order to shield and protect their health.

He said:

"Now that we have been going for nearly 9 years, I feel the time has come to take a step back from the position of President of the ‘Bread of Life’, foodbank. It was never my intention to hold on for as long as possible or never to pass the baton on. So with this in mind, I expressed my wish to stand down. The decision was taken partly on medical grounds.

"During the period of this lockdown, Ripon Community House staff & volunteers have done a magnificent job of providing a foodbank service and have been a godsend."

Ripon Community House will soon take over the running of the foodbank indefinitely and will call the service 'Food Support Ripon'.

This change is expected to happen on 1st August.

But Alec is urging people to continue to donate to the foodbank.

He added:

"If you are a volunteer or donor of funds or food, please do not stop your support of providing food to those in need in the Ripon area, instead I ask you to support Ripon Community House in providing a foodbank service as they will still need your help going forward.

"You will however need to change your banking details for any standing orders you may have made out to us. The new details will be sent to you in due course, and will also be available from Community House."
