They're putting all their efforts into preparing for the upcoming play-offs.

  • Harrogate Town have reluctantly declined an invitation to play Celtic in a friendly this weekend
  • Town boss Simon Weaver had to say no as he doesn't want to risk any injuries ahead of the crucial play offs
  • He's hopeful there may be another opportunity to take on the Scottish champions in the future

Harrogate Town have been forced to turn down an invitation to play a friendly against Scottish football giants Celtic this Saturday.

It would have taken place behind closed doors at Loughborough, where Celtic are currently in training.

But Town boss Simon Weaver reluctantly said no, as he focuses on keeping his squad in the best possible shape for the crucial play offs coming later this month.

Simon Weaver said:

"Unfortunately for me, we had to turn the offer down. It's not every day you get the chance to play Celtic, so it was disappointing, from our point of view, not to take them up on their very kind offer.

"We just have too small a squad, only four defenders fit, so far too much to risk at the minute. We won't be playing any friendlies against anyone, because of that risk factor.

"I really hope it doesn't offend anyone, because we would never (normally) turn down a club of such prestige as Celtic.

"I made it clear that we'd love the opportunity in the future."
