Harrogate Liberal Democrat Group say they support free NHS staff parking

  • Harrogate and Knaresborough Lib Dems are supporting all free parking for NHS staff.
  • The measure was brought in at the end of March but is now under threat.
  • The Lib Dems is now calling on North Yorkshire County Council to show its support.

The Liberal Democrats group in Harrogate and Knaresborough is supporting free car parking for all NHS staff across North Yorkshire.

Healthcare staff were told at the end of March the government would cover their parking fees for "going above and beyond every day" as they tackled COVID-19.

But the Department of Health has said the scheme can't continue indefinitely and only 'key patient groups' and staff in 'certain circumstances' will be able to park for free.

The Liberal Democrat Group on North Yorkshire County Council has now tabled a motion for the next council meeting on 22nd July calling on the council “to make known to all NHS Hospital Trusts in North Yorkshire that this council supports and encourages free on-site parking for NHS staff at their workplaces.”

Cllr Geoff Webber, leader of the Lib Dem group said:

“This motion is not a political move and, indeed, I hope that councillors of all political parties will support it. What it does do is to recognize the immense contribution made to the nation’s health by frequently underpaid and overworked NHS staff, many of whom are on minimum wages. To charge them for parking in order to care for the sick is an absolute injustice.”
