Stray FM Ultimate Local Hero to carry Olympic Torch

George Stocker

Published by The Stray FM News Team at 11:23am 8th December 2011. (Updated at 6:14pm 8th December 2011)

A 12-year-old boy has been chosen as Yorkshire's first Olympic Torch bearer.

Around 30 people nominated George Stocker from Little Ribston near Wetherby.

He has battled a brain tumour since the age of nine and his tireless fundraising has brought in well over £50,000 for The Candlelighters Trust.

On his Justgiving page, the youngster says he had two big ambitions during his treatment - to play rugby again and support other children with the same condition.

George picked up Stray FM's Ultimate Local Hero award in 2010.

He cannot believe that he is 'number one' once again: "I personally didn't even think I would ever be nominated for such a thing, but now I'll actually be holding the torch, it's astonishing."

His proud father Roger said it is a great result: "If I think of all the other people who've helped along the way, we've literally had hundreds of people being inspired by George's story and taking part in fundraising on the back of George's story. This is for them as well, I think."

The Stockers hope that George being chosen to carry the Olympic Torch will inspire even more people to raise money for children like him.
