Nearly 2,000 incidents of domestic abuse are reported across Harrogate and Craven each year.

That's from the Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS) which works to help people who suffer at the hands of their partners.

Domestic abuse affects anyone. It is a problem present everywhere in the country and the charity will help any victim, including men.

IDAS revealed to Stray FM that there can be up to 40 domestic abuse cases a month in Harrogate alone.

In official figures, between 2010 and 2012, there were 427 incidents reported in Craven and 1,457 in Harrogate.

Janice Fife is the Project Manager in Harrogate. She explains about the charity and how it helps people through the outreach scheme and its refuge:

 

Domestic abuse can be anything from emotional abuse, being controlled, being isolated to physical violence and stalking.

There are even cases where a person's money is controlled.
