What's causing young people in North Yorkshire to seek help for mental health issues?

Stray FM has been investigating the mental health of teenagers in the lead-up to World Mental Health Day on Saturday.  

We've been speaking to young people themselves, the NHS and the charities and organisations working hard to help them. 

Wellspring, a charity based in Starbeck, offers one-to-one counselling for children aged 8 and upwards.

It also runs an 'Empower Course', designed for teenagers aged 14 and over. 

Both of these teenage girls took part in the course and they've been speaking to Stray FM's Lisa North:

Services in North Yorkshire say a lot of their referrals relate to self-harm.

A special protocol has recently been introduced in North Yorkshire to help support young people who are at risk of self-harm.

The pathway has been developed for anyone who works with children to help identify people at risk more quickly.

One the services involved in the project is Compass REACH.

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, or CAMHS, is an NHS service in Harrogate.

It treats children up to the age of 18 and is part of the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. 

Clinical Nurse Specialist Alison Machin has been speaking to Stray FM: 

Relate Mid Yorkshire offers counselling for young people from the age of 5 to 18.

The charity says 39 young people are currently on its waiting list waiting for an appointment. 

It's just moved to a new premises in Harrogate and Lisa North has been down to meet counsellor Janice Midwood: 

One Harrogate charity has teamed up with schools in the Harrogate District to help improve teenagers' emotional well-being.

Just B, which is part of Saint Michael's Hospice, has started working with a number of primary and secondary schools. 

The initiative sees staff go into the schools to work with young people teachers are concerned about.
