Harrogate's Special Care Babies - Day 3

More and more children are surviving a premature birth, thanks to improvements in care and technology.

Last year, 189 patients passed through the doors of Harrogate's Special Care Baby Unit.

Like most units across the country, it is seeing increasing numbers of children born into special care, primarily due to the increased birth rate.

These pressures are being highlighted by charities which have launched a campaign against the impact of Government cutbacks on neo-natal units.

As part of our series looking at 'special care' babies, we've been down to the unit at Harrogate District Hospital to find out more about life on the ward.

Staff there are gearing up for the Christmas period, when numbers tend to rise.

This could in part be down to the stresses associated with the festive period.
