In our final report on the Harrogate Homeless Project, we have spoken to the managers who say that their work cannot be done without public support.

The charity runs a direct access hostel in Harrogate which is only one of its kind in the district.

It has 16 single rooms for homeless adults and works closely with the police, probation and drug and alcohol services.

Official figures for rough sleepers show that the district had the second highest estimate in Yorkshire and the Humber in 2010

Harrogate Borough Council then commissioned the project to provide the town's first cold weather provision, which was used by 42 service users over a three-month period.

The charity recently secured £240,000 through the national transition fund.

Liz Hancock, the project manager says it'll be used to kick-start a new scheme already tested in London: "What we've proposed to do is copy a scheme from London called 'No Second Night Out', which is a short stay assessment for people new to the streets with a rapid turnaround response.

"It's so that people don't have to spend more than one night on the streets."

The hostel does receive some Government funding, however its day centre Springboard relies entirely on donations.

Linda helps run the service, which opens on weekdays and offers a meal, cleaning facilities and shower facilities: "We don't get any funding so we rely on places such as Fodder in Harrogate, they donate twice a week.

"Also we get the bread from Bettys. We just have to rely on the odd ten pound here, there and everywhere from people."
