Day two of Stray FM's tour of our great local High Streets takes us to a market town which values its independent shops and proper northern boozers.

Although part of Leeds City Council, Otley stands resolutely independent as a town with its own identity, something that is reflected in the make-up of its retail centre.

Love The High Street Week was first dreamt up after national chains HMV and Jessops became the latest mega-brands to go into administration.

Neither chain featured here, and business leaders in Otley tell us that it is exactly that absence of national retailers that has helped the town be more resilient than many others to the economic downturn.

In fact, a quick scoot around the centre and you will probably understand why up to 94% of the town's retailers are said to be independent.

Another asset that Otley is famous for is the number of pubs per head, thought to be one of the highest ratios in the country.

At the last count there were 18, with a 19th to follow, and It has recently prompted locals to launch the Otley Ale Trail - a fascinating look at the town's drinking heritage past and present.

If you're looking for an introduction to Otley's town centre, we recommend getting hold of the Shop Heroes Trail booklets still doing the rounds with plenty of quirky little retailers to visit.

You can also use your Otley Loyalty Card to get some pretty tasty discounts and offers at shops around town.
