Day four of Stray FM's Love The High Street week heads to Ripon.

Although it's the fourth smallest city in the country, it's still packed with independent retailers.

69% of Ripon's shops are independents, so there really is the opportunity for shoppers to find unique products all in one place.

It's also steeped in local history, with the Hornblower 'setting the watch' every single night at the obelisk - a tradition which dates back to the Middle Ages.

Even the obelisk in the centre of the Market Place is believed to be the oldest free-standing obelisk in the country.

Ripon has much to offer in the way of tourist attractions, including the ancient cathedral and the Courthouse Museum.

There are almost 240 business premises in Ripon City Centre and just 9% of the shops are vacant - significantly below the national average.

The City Council has also just recruited a new City Development Manager.

Alan Weston talks to Stray FM about his new role:

Ripon is renowned for its community spirit, which seems to be upholding the city through adversity, bringing business through the economic downturn and now the prospect of Claro Barracks' closure, which was announced by the Ministry of Defence as part of spending cuts.

Sallyann, from Carlton Couture bridal shop on North Street, says the community spirit among traders is great:
