Love The High Street - Ilkley

The Grove

Published at 6:02am 16th March 2013. (Updated at 9:42am 2nd September 2013)

Altogether now..."On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at, On Ilkla Moor Bah..."

You get the picture.

The final day of Stray FM's Love The High Street Week brings us to the town which not only provides the setting for the famous Yorkshire anthem, but also offers a fair bit when it comes to shopping.

Ilkley has a healthy blend of national retailers and small bespoke shops, with many catering towards the high-end of fashion.

There are also plenty of specialist traders too and some nice Victorian architecture to look at, preferably from the window of one of Ilkley's many cafés.

Five facts about Ilkey and its town centre:

- There are signs people have been living in Ilkley since around 11,000 BC. It would be some years before jovial Countdown host Richard Whiteley would call the town his home.

- Ilkley’s main shopping areas are situated around The Grove (pictured above) and Brook Street (below). Independent traders can be found across the town in places like the restored Victorian Arcade.

- Ilkley is a Fairtrade Town. That means you’ll find Fairtrade tea and coffee served at places including council buildings and several shops showing their support.

- Ilkley was one of the locations used for the filming of Calendar Girls.

- Ilkley is home to one of the UK’s most important literary festivals - this year celebrating its 40th year. Previous key speakers include the TV journalist Jeremy Paxman, documentary maker Louis Theroux and ex-Lib Dem leader Paddy Ashdown.

Miranda (pictured above) co-owns Create - a pottery and painting café in the Victorian Arcade.

She tells why she and her business partner set up in Ilkley:
