Signing of a "versitile defender" could cause some issues with mistaken identity

With Harrogate Town's successful first season in the National League behind them, attentions have turned to the transfer window, with the team looking to build on their play off appearance next season.

Today the club announced a new signing, a 20 year old defender from Barnsley who'd spent time on loan at Darlington last season.

When making the announcement the club said on their official website:

The versatile defender joins from Barnsley, where he signed his first professional deal in July 2017, shortly after being named 2015/16 Academy Player of the Year at Oakwell.

The 20-year-old made his senior debut in 2018 in the EFL Trophy having been a regular starter for The Tykes U23 side.

The 2018/19 season saw him join National League North side Darlington on loan from December onwards, with the young defender making 14 appearances for The Quakers.

We would like to welcome Will to the club and look forward to seeing him in action.

The transfer is subject to FA and National League approval on 1st July 2019.

Unfortunately for this new young signing, he also shares a name with a certain Stray FM presenter.

The defender's name? Will Smith.

Stray FM's Will Smith said:

I'm delighted to sign for Harrogate Town, although I can't remember where my boots are

When we told him it was a different Will Smith he added:

I wish him all the best. He's welcome to try dropping my name to jump the queue at the Viper Rooms when he's got some time off.

Harrogate's new signing took to twitter to share his excitement:

Everyone at Stray FM wishes Will and Harrogate Town all the best for the new season!
