The winner of the first-ever John Myers Award for Best Local Station will be announced at the Radio Academy's Audio & Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs) in March

  • The awards are the UK Radio industry's Oscars.
  • The nomination was revealed at an industry party in London on Wednesday (15 January).
  • It follows a record year for Stray FM on multiple fronts.

The UK radio landscape has been through some changes over the last few years but in Harrogate, Craven and Wharfedale Stray FM has been consistently delivering Proper Local Radio for our listeners.

Last night this was recognised with the announcement that Stray FM has made the shortlist for the John Myers Award for Best Local Station will be announced at the Radio Academy's Audio & Radio Industry Awards (ARIAs).

The award is brand new this year and named in honour of John Myers, a leading figure in the commercial radio industry who died suddenly in 2019.

Stray FM's nomination reflects the station's passion for the area that it serves. It's built on the coverage of huge events including The UCI Road World Championships, The Great Yorkshire Show and The Stray FM Local Hero Awards

It underlines Stray FM's dedication to the best local news and information, and follows a record year for Stray FM's digital platforms; highest-ever online listening numbers, the most visits to its website and highest number of downloads of the free Stray FM app.

Nick Hancock, Stray FM's Content Director and Breakfast Show Presenter, said:

"I have been so excited to share this news with our audience - I couldn't sleep last night! It's our news, it's industry news, but it wouldn't be possible without our incredible loyal listeners, and our wonderful advertisers that make the station possible.

"I'm incredibly proud of the entire small, but wonderfully passionate and dedicated, Stray FM team, who work tirelessly to bring Proper Local Radio to Harrogate, Craven & Wharfedale.

"Now all we need is the Secret Sound done...."

Stray FM's Managing Director, Sarah Barry added:

"It's fitting that as we celebrated our 25th anniversary in 2019 with record results across the board, Stray FM has been recognised as one of only two commercial radio stations nominated for this prestigious industry award.

"The UK radio industry has seen much change over recent years but I'm delighted that our dedication to Proper Local Radio has been recognised, especially in a category named in honour of the late John Myers who was a legend in our industry, a man who inspired so many and who championed the importance of local radio in communities. This is a credit to the whole Stray FM team who are simply extra ordinary”

The award winners will be revealed at a glittering ceremony at the London Palladium on 4th March.
