A driver had a lucky escape when he swerved to avoid a fox on a nasty bend near Buttersyke Bar.

The barrier buckled just metres from a steep bank onto railway tracks on the A658.

It happened on the evening of Thursday 10 January.

The driver said he was travelling at 20mph when a fox ran out in front of the car, on the sharp bend on the road from Pool-in-Wharfedale, just before the Buttersyke Bar roundabout.

He said the fox was fine, but the car hit the kerb after swerving to avoid it, and smashed into the barrier.

A witness stopped and offered to call an ambulance, but the driver was uninjured.

The fox escaped unharmed - and providing it stays off the roads, will hopefully live a long and happy life after the incident.

It's uncertain at this stage whether the same can be said for the car.
