Harrogate town centre aims to maximise the benefit of extra visitors during the nine day cycling event

  • It's one of the many ways the BID have been trying to town centre retail since its formation
  • 20,000 Autumn Offers booklets will be given out
  • 64 businesses from across the town centre are offering exclusive discounts and eals
  • Available from next week at Leeds Bus Station, Harrogate Town Centre and the BID kiosk in the Victoria Shopping Centre

With thousands of extra visitors expected in the town during the UCI Road World Championships, businesses have been coming together to maximise the potential of the event.

Harrogate's Business Improvement District has created a "Harrogate Autumn Offers" booklet that will be distributed to shoppers, both residents and visitors alike, from next week.

With 20,000 booklets available there will be plenty of chance to grab some deals, as 64 businesses have decided to celebrate Yorkshire 2019 with an offer.

The booklets will be handed out from next week at Leeds Bus Station, in Harrogate town centre and at the freestanding kiosk in Victoria Shopping Centre.

The booklets feature offers from local Harrogate businesses to visitors and residents alike. A sample of offers include £5 off treatments for new clients at the Harrogate Nail Bair, half price drinks at Bean and Bud, half price canvas wraps from Max Spielmann and 20% discount off cask ale taster trays at the Hales Bar.

Elizabeth Murphy, Harrogate BID manager, said:

“The voucher booklet is one of many recent initiatives from the BID team to try and support our retail sector. The deals will be available throughout autumn, but we wanted to capture the thousands of visitors descending on Harrogate as the host town of the cycle races. The ambition is to pull people into our shops, entice them to leave the fan zone, and spend money with local businesses – many of whom, particularly those not in hospitality – feel divided about the event and worried about footfall to their shops.”

“Over nine days, there will be people who need to or want to shop, and we hope the booklet will entice them to seek out places that aren’t the obvious tourism spots and look beyond the fan zones.”

The discounts don't stop there either, with the BID team planning a second booklet for the festive season.

Harrogate BID is also putting together some street entertainment for visitors and residents to enjoy during the weekends of the cycling events.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September features acrobats, face painters and stilt walkers in the town centre.

The evening of Friday 27 September will see The Skulls – a theatre troupe of puppetry, magic and theatre with a deadly live soundtrack – invade the town centre.

Elizabeth said:

“The Skulls are a fantastic, energetic experience. They draw on the masquerades from New Orleans and Mexico, which of course are all about being a celebration of life, as a reminder to live in the moment. Hopefully they’ll really appeal to that night-time audience!”

Street acts and performers will continue throughout the final weekend.
