Ripon's Abi Smith describes her race as 'crazy'

  • Abi Smith competed in the Women's Junior Road Race earlier.
  • She sprinted across the 92km route from Doncaster to Harrogate.
  • 92 athletes took part.
  • The 17-year-old came 35th.

Ripon's Abi Smith who's competed in the Women's Junior Road Race earlier described her event as 'crazy'.

The 17 year old - who attends Ripon Grammar School - was one of the 92 cyclists on the road.

The athletes took on a gruelling 86km Doncaster to Harrogate route.

During the race, a number of crashes hindered the peloton's progress and slimmed the group down.

The teenager finished 35th which is a fantastic effort given its her first world event.

Our reporter Lizzie Day caught up with Abi after she crossed the finishing line in Harrogate:

 

America's Megan Jastrab came in first, followed by Belgium’s Julie de Wilde who secured second place, with the Netherlands’ Lieke Nooijen taking third.

GB's Elynor Backstedt, finished in fifth.
