Campaigners are claiming victory after blocking plans to relocate Pool-in-Wharfedale's Post Office.

Bosses were considering a move from the village shop to the Shell service station, but local residents raised concerns about its location on a busy main road.

Following pressure from MP Greg Mulholland, the proposals have now been shelved.

He said: "I am delighted that Post Office Ltd has listened to my calls for Pool Post Office to be retained at the heart of the community and be categorised as a Community Post Office, as there is clearly no suitable alternative location for Pool Post Office with their own qualifying distance of half a mile.

"There was a fundamental flaw in the Post Office Ltd decision-making process when looking to relocate the Post Office in the Shell service station, as its documentation stated that the petrol station can be accessed by crossing a 'minor road' - when in fact the road they are talking about is a major road, the A659. I concluded that this made the decision-making process and proposals invalid."

Mr Mulholland is urging residents to complete a survey which he hopes will be considered by Post Office bosses in their review of the branch next year.
