Stray FM's brand new digital radio station Stray Extra has been officially launched.

Four new transmitters were switched on just after 8.40am, providing a DAB signal to most of North Yorkshire.

Stray Extra will feature all of the shows currently on Stray FM, plus some specialist programmes from early next year.

Sarah Barry, Managing Director of Stray FM, said: "Stray FM epitomises what true local radio is about, so we're delighted to offer our listeners in the Harrogate District another platform to listen to us on. We plan to offer a slightly different service on DAB which will enable us to deliver even more local content to both existing and new listeners alike.

"The Stray FM team are incredibly excited about the future and plans are well under way now. More details will be announced in the New Year, but if you can't wait until then, contact me now at sarah.barry@strayfm.com"

Local broadcasters Harry Gration, from BBC Look North, and Christine Talbot, from ITV Yorkshire, were joined by Emmerdale star Katherine Dow Blyton to press the big green button and switch on Stray Extra.

Ford Ennals, CEO of Digital UK, said: "This is a big day. It's big news for radio and big news for North Yorkshire.

"Today we're switching on four digital transmitters, which means that 700,000 people across North Yorkshire from Scarborough, to Harrogate, to York are going to be able to get their local stations for the first time on digital radio."
