Organisers of the upcoming Tour de Yorkshire are expecting thousands to take part in a mass cycle ride along the race route.

Much of the final stage, which includes a section through Ilkley and Otley, will be tackled by members of the public, ahead of the professionals.

Entries for the sportive will open on 4 February, with riders able to choose from 50km, 100km or 140km routes.

A women-only Cycletta sportive will also take place along the 50km route.

The Tour de Yorkshire is a new UCI-approved international cycle race which will be held for the first time on 1 to 3 May.

The event is being supported by five-time Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault (pictured).

Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "This is such an exciting opportunity for Yorkshire.

"The Tour de Yorkshire is all about growing the visitor economy and this event, with thousands taking part from all over the UK and overseas, will bring even more people to visit our county."

The sportive will take place on 3 May.
