Police in North Yorkshire are asking everyone to be on their guard against conmen making phone calls about bank fraud.

It comes after someone in Ripon was contacted by a man claiming to be a detective investigating a fraud involving their bank account.

He asked for account details including Personal Identification Numbers and also asked them to call back on the police non-emergency number 101 to verify his identity.

The victim's phone call then appeared to be re-routed back to the suspects who held their line open.

Police say an officer will never ask for bank account security details.

They also advise waiting at least five minutes and ensuring that you have a dialling tone before making another phone call.

Anyone who wants to report a fraud can call North Yorkshire Police on 101, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or click here.
