A record number of new businesses were set up in North Yorkshire last year.

Figures show there were over 6,500 start-ups across the county, which is a leap of more than 700 from 2013.

Statistics compiled by www.informdirect.co.uk show the total number of businesses operating in the region rose to a high of 43,572.

Henry Catchpole, CEO of Inform Direct, said: "This is clearly an area where fledgling firms are flourishing and where people are starting to make their dreams a reality in the word of business.

"There is lots of support out there for fledgling businesses, but in North Yorkshire the stats show that this support is translating into an impressive growth rate."

Richard Wilson, who opened the Cake 'Ole in Skipton's Craven Court last year, added: "We've found it's been absolutely brilliant.

"We actually started up and expected to do around about 30 tables a day, but we're averaging 110.

"So, for us, it's been a great year."
