Around 40 people have been evacuated from a block of sheltered housing flats in Ilkley after a fire involving four mobility scooters.

Firefighters from Ilkley, Otley, Rawdon and Silsden rushed to Leconfield House, on Cowpasture Road, after smoke detectors raised the alarm with residents yesterday evening.

On arrival, crews discovered smoke billowing from a garage on the ground floor of the five-storey building.

The fire started in one mobility scooter which had been on charge for around six hours.

It spread to three other mobility scooters and also caused heat damage to a car.

No-one was injured by the fire and staff at the nearby Tesco supermarket helped accommodate everyone until they could return home.

Tony Pearson, Temporary Station Commander for Ilkley, said: "Fortunately this fire was confined to a small area within the basement garage and only caused damage to vehicles. However, it had the potential to be a lot worse and could have posed a real danger to a lot of people living in the flats above it.

"If people do have a similar system of a designated area for mobility scooter storage, we would advise them to do a risk assessment. Ideally we would urge people to store such vehicles in a separate external garage building.

"Follow the manufacturers' instructions when charging and don't overload plug sockets. Ideally have them serviced annually to detect any faults."
