Otley's cycling World Champion Lizzie Armitstead is one of 12 names up for Sports Personality of the Year.

She sprinted to victory to claim the Women's Road Race title in Richmond, Virginia, earlier this year.

The former Prince Henry's Grammar School pupil also finished top of the UCI Road World Cup standings for the second year in a row.

British Cycling President Bob Howden said he was "delighted" to see Lizzie nominated.

He added: "Our #WeRide strategy aims to get one million more women cycling by 2020 and it's fantastic for young girls to have a role model like Lizzie to be able to look up to."

Heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill and former Leeds Rhinos skipper Kevin Sinfield are the other Yorkshire stars on the shortlist.

Andy Murray remains the favourite to win with the bookies, after guiding Great Britain to its first Davis Cup tennis title in 79 years.

Last year's winner, Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, is among the other contenders.
