Drivers see red over road closure

It's emerged that council staff directing traffic on the A59 between Harrogate and Skipton have faced abuse from some drivers.

The road has been closed at Kex Gill since the beginning of this month because of a landslip.

In one instance, police were called after people wanting to bypass the offical diversion became abusive and threatening.

North Yorkshire County Council is reviewing the current traffic management plan for minor roads after concerns were raised by local residents.

Highways Communications Officer Deborah Flowers told Stray FM why the main diversion route cannot be changed: "For any sort of significant road like an A-class road, we can only sign to a similar class road, so it is quite a long diversion route.

"Quite rightly, people feel that they should be able to go from A to B in the shortest route - these are exceptional circumstances.

"We were left with the alternative of finding a robust traffic management, which is the installation of the concrete bollards that we've used."
