It has stood derelict and overgrown for years, but now there's a new project to restore Otley Lido.

Leeds City Council has given a community group 12 months to come up with a plan to refurbish and run the outdoor swimming pool at Wharfemeadows Park.

They'll also need to find the cash and estimate that it would cost around £5 million.

Since the swimming pool closed in 1993, the site has gone through numerous incarnations, firstly as a leisure venue and then gradually, over the years, entering into a decline and finally closing to the public a few years ago.

The recent floods also caused further damage to the site, resulting in part of the retaining wall collapsing.

Leonie Sharp, chair of the Friends of Otley Lido, said: "Our pool was the highlight of many folks' experiences from 1923 onwards and could be a reality again if we have the backing of all the community, businesses and local folk.

"We are asking people to join us as individuals and for the business community to back us as well.

"It has been too long an eyesore and is such an opportunity for our town to bring a vibrant leisure facility to Otley."
