AUDIO: Man killed in house explosion

A 63-year-old man has died after an explosion at a house in Haxby near York.

The house was completely destroyed when it happened on Springwood at around 7.30am.

Some neighbouring properties have been damaged and local residents described the explosion as "sounding like a bomb".

Emergency services are still at the scene, which remains cordoned off.

Inspector Steve Breen, from North Yorkshire Police, has given this update:

More than 30 firefighters were sent to the scene, including specialist officers and an urban search and rescue team from West Yorkshire.

Group Manager Stuart Simpson is from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service:

Yorkshire Ambulance Service checked over two people, but they didn't need hospital treatment.
