Skipton to get new WI

Skipton to get new WI

Another branch of the Women's Institute is set to be established in Skipton.

It comes as the organisation continues to grow across North Yorkshire.

Two existing branches meet on weekday evenings, but there has been an increasing demand for another WI to give local women a chance to meet during the day.

Cynthia Kent, who has organised the initial meeting, said: "Being part of the WI offers all sorts of opportunities, from making friends to trying new activities and learning new skills.

"While the existing branches in Skipton and the surrounding area are going strong, there are some women who would prefer to meet during the day to fit around other commitments. From young mums who are free between the school run to ladies looking for a way to make more of their retirement, we already know of quite a few who are keen to join us.

"The great thing about being in the WI is you can organise whatever talks or activities you like, so you get what you want from your membership. As a WI member, you are not only part of your own group but also in a large national organisation with a strong history of campaigning for social justice and equality.

"We can't wait to share all that the WI offers with a new group of ladies in Skipton."

The initial meeting will be held at 1.30pm at the Three Links Club on Rectory Lane, Skipton, on Tuesday.

If the women present agree to establish the new group, it will meet once a month from then onwards.

The WI is open to all women aged 18 or over, and annual membership for 2016 is £37.50.

Anyone who goes to the first meeting will be able to sign up on the day.

No booking is required, but anyone interested in joining the committee to help set up the new WI should e-mail before the first meeting.
