A group of campaigners have held a protest in Skipton, calling for the towpath on Broughton Road to be upgraded.

They've demonstrated outside Craven District Council's offices, before meeting with representatives from the authority and the Canal & River Trust.

The residents are arguing that funding, which is earmarked for improvement work on another part of the canal, should be spent on Broughton Road.

Jonathan Stafford, who's part of the campaign, said: "It's very muddy, and there has been one dog walker who's slipped and broken her wrist.

"I've seen tourists coming out to Aireville Bridge, they take one look and turn back. Is that how the Canal & River Trust want the towpaths to be used? Somehow I don't think so.

"Ideally, we want them to turn around and say we're going to divert some of the money from the other end, and we'll sort your end out ASAP."
