Heavy snow has caused disruption on roads across Harrogate. Craven and Wharfedale.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in some places and police have asked motorists not to travel unless they need to.

The A59 at Kex Gill was closed on Wednesday morning because of a crash involving four vehicles.

The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for ice and snow, with wintry showers expected overnight and through Thursday morning.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire County Council said: "Gritters have been out treating the priority 1 and 2 routes since 5am, and are continuing to deal with the snow, which fell at its worst during the morning commuter period when roads were already congested.

"There have been a number of incidents where drivers and vehicles have struggled to cope with the snow and this has had created further congestion.

"The situation is improving and the roads should be back to normal very soon."
