Emergency road closure in Silsden

Emergency road closure in Silsden

Published at 4:18pm 14th March 2016. (Updated at 4:25pm 14th March 2016)

A collapsing bridge means that the main road into Silsden is going to be closed for urgent repairs.

Movement of the supports of the privately-owned bridge, which is off Keighley Road (A6034), is already causing problems on the footway and it's likely to obstruct the road if action isn't taken.

If it's left, the bridge could fully collapse, affecting electricity, gas and telecommunications infrastructure.

To carry out the necessary repairs safely, Bradford Council's highways engineers have ordered a closure of the A6034 from 8pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday.

It will enable contractors to lift off the deck of the bridge by crane to rebuild and strengthen the supports.

The strengthening work will then be done afterwards, using temporary two-way traffic signals on the A6034 over a period of time.

A diversion route will be signposted on the A629 towards Skipton and back on the A65 towards Addingham.

It's not possible to divert traffic through Kildwick because of narrow roads and weight restrictions.

Access will be maintained for residents up to the point of closure.
