A man who robbed an elderly woman in Settle has been jailed for more than three years.

Luke Widdop, of no fixed address, knocked the 75-year-old to the ground and stole her handbag on Kirkgate last month.

She suffered hand injuries as Widdop ran from the scene clutching the bag.

The 44-year-old was caught after an extensive police appeal and investigation.

He pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to 40 months behind bars.

His victim has been receiving support from North Yorkshire Police following the incident.

Craven beat manager Sergeant Les Moorhouse said: "This was a particularly cowardly attack, which was understandably very upsetting for both the victim and the Settle community as a whole.

"However, starting with only a description of the offender, officers were able to use their strong local knowledge and Craven's excellent community spirit to quickly identify Widdop and build a case against him.

"This outcome shows the power of good community policing, and I'm delighted that our investigation has led to a substantial prison sentence for this unpleasant and callous offender."
