Campaign to boost tourism in Yorkshire

Published at 6:00am 25th March 2016.

A £1 million marketing campaign will show off Yorkshire to the world.

Funding from the Government, VisitBritain and commercial partners will help Welcome to Yorkshire target key visitor markets in the United States, France, Australia, Germany and Netherlands, as well as across the UK.

The campaign was revealed at the tourism agency's Y16 event, which showcased the very best of the region.

Sir Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "What a year we have ahead of us. We are thrilled to announce a major international marketing campaign to help promote our county to the world.

"Expect another busy, exciting year for Yorkshire - from Tour de Yorkshire and the hotly anticipated Women's Race to our biggest garden to date at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Make no mistake, 2016 is set to be our best year yet!"

Sally Balcombe, Chief Executive of VisitBritain/VisitEngland, added: "This new £1 million international marketing campaign will showcase Yorkshire to an overseas audience of millions, not only putting it firmly on the radar of international visitors and inspiring more of them to come and experience this wonderful region for themselves, but crucially helping to make sure that the economic benefits of tourism are spread right across the local economy."

Welcome to Yorkshire has a brand new website - www.yorkshire.com - and there has already been a boost in traffic to members' pages on the site.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Flybe were named as official airport and airplane partners for 2016.
