Labour MP Jo Cox has died after being shot and stabbed in her constituency near Leeds.

She was attacked in Birstall this afternoon.


Ilkley's MP Kris Hopkins has also released a statement after the shooting of Labour MP Jo Cox near Leeds. 

He said: "I am horrified to learn of the attack on my colleague Jo Cox.

"My thoughts and prayers are with her family and many friends at this most difficult of times."


Some of our local MPs are responding to the breaking news this afternoon that a Labour MP has been shot near Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police say Jo Cox is in a critical condition after the incident in Birstall.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested.

West Yorkshire Police says it's seen a 33% increase in domestic abuse calls since England's first game of Euro 2016.

A total of 3,606 calls were received between 8pm and 3am on Saturday night when England drew against Russia in Marseille, which is around 200 calls up from the previous Saturday night.

This year, a social media campaign is running to highlight where victims can get support, using the hashtag #dontsufferinsilence.

Investigations are continuing after a man died on the A1(M) near Bramham.

The 36-year-old was hit by a lorry on the southbound carriageway at an area known as Aberford Dip.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
