Yorkshire's MPs have been paying tribute to Labour MP Jo Cox who has died after being shot and stabbed near Leeds.

She was attacked following a constituency surgery in Birstall on Thursday afternoon.

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Keighley and Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins said: "Like all colleagues in the House of Commons who knew Jo, I am devastated at her passing.

"She brought a refreshing vigour to politics and, coupled with her boundless energy, was a formidable campaigner on many issues, most famously the welfare of Syrian refugees.

"She wasn't a tribal politician and, to her immense credit, always managed to get her message across without bitterness or rancour.

"This was in such stark contrast to the levels of personal abuse that politicians from all parties sadly now have to face. You only have to look at the comments section of newspaper websites or on social media to see the evidence of this.

"I hope that Jo's passing will encourage the haters to follow her lead and show a level of compassion and respect for those who hold a different political viewpoint.

"My thoughts and sympathies remain with Jo's husband Brendan and their two young children."
