What is it?

Standedge Tunnel is Britain's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel, hidden deep beneath the beautiful Pennine countryside.

One of the seven wonders of the waterways, this must-see attraction is located in Marsden, a charming Yorkshire village.

Step on board for a 30-minute boat trip through the 200-year-old tunnel where you will hear fascinating tales from times gone by.

Discover the history of Standedge in the visitor centre which is FREE to enter!

Meanwhile, keep the kids occupied in the indoor soft play area AND outdoor adventure play area!

Feeling peckish? You’ll find the wonderful Watersedge Café in the old Tunnel End cottages.

What makes it a Top Summer Day Out?

From 23 July – 28 October, Standedge Tunnel is open every day (11-3 weekdays, 11-4 weekends) with 30-minute boat trips running every hour on the hour.

Nestled in miles of rolling hills and picturesque views, it is the perfect opportunity to get out and enjoy the great outdoors with the family, especially when the sun is shining!

There is plenty to see and do; bring a picnic, check out the nature trail, get involved in some pond dipping and let the kids run wild on the outdoor adventure play area.

Huddersfield Yoga & Wellbeing Festival 2018
Saturday 11 August, 11am – 9pm

The first of its kind and scale, Huddersfield will be welcoming the #huddswellfest on Saturday 11th August at Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre in Marsden.

The full day, family event is being brought to life by owner and founder of Yorkshire Yogi, local entrepreneur, Kelly Thistlethwaite.

  • Over 60 sessions delivering yoga, Pilates, CrossFit, circuits, nutrition talks, meditation, dance and Zumba
  • Talks on mental health and wellbeing, mindful walks and drawing, forest bathing
  • Vegan & Vegetarian food vendors inc. punch bar, tapas, coffee
  • Woodwork specialists, holistic therapists, health products, yoga clothing, essential oils, arts & crafts
  • Chill out areas
  • Suitable for all ages

By boat - There’s moorings at both the Marsden end (at the Visitor Centre, Lock 42) and the Diggle end. Check our boating through Standedge page for details on how to book your passage through the tunnel.

By car - SATNAV HD7 6DH takes you to the free parking at Marsden Station (HD7 6DH), from there take the 15 minute pushchair friendly walk along the towpath to join us. There is disabled parking at our visitor centre.

By train - Marsden Station is a 15 minute walk along the beautifully restored Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath.

By bus - Bus route 184 Oldham - Huddersfield drops off and picks up on the A62 in Marsden village then follow the canal towpath

By water taxi - The Huddersfield Canal Society’s volunteers run a 12 seater water taxi service between Marsden Railway Station and Standedge at weekends and bank holidays.

By coach - Coach drop off is only at Marsden Station but there's more parking at Lock 42 near the train station. Coaches are not allowed on site due to the tunnel’s historic nature.

By boot or bike - Follow the main road through the village to Marsden Station and join the towpath. Let us know if you travelled Green - walkers, cyclists and public transport users get a 5% discount on a hot drink!
